Independent voters have drifted 28 points away from President Joe Biden and toward former President Donald Trump since 2020, an NPR/Marist poll revealed Wednesday.
The dramatic change after four years is terrible news for Biden’s re-election campaign, which faces dire poll numbers on almost every front.
The poll found that during Biden’s term as president, his approval rating among independents declined by 12 points, while Trump’s approval rating increased by 16 points.
- 2020: Biden 57% (+21) Trump 36%
- 2024: President Trump 52% (+7) Biden 45%

Real Clear Politics’ national average points to Trump. take the lead Biden had a 0.8 percentage point lead, but national polls are less important than polls in battleground states.

“Overall, the poll shows that the expansion of one-party control in the states has left only a small number of states politically competitive, and among the voters who will have the most influence on the outcome of the election. “It shows that there is a lot of dissatisfaction with Mr. Biden.” journal report.

- Defending democracy: Biden 43 percent (+1) Trump 42 percent
- Abortion: Biden 45 percent (+12) Trump 33 percent
- Inflation and rising costs: Trump 53% (+20) Biden 33%
- Mental and physical strength required for the president: Trump 48% (+20) Biden 28%
- Ukraine/Russia war: Trump 46% (+9) Biden 37%
- Israel/Hamas War: Trump 45% (+14) Biden 31%
Biden’s border security and economy are both favorable to Trump, making them two of his top priorities in 2024. A YouGov poll in March found Biden’s approval rating was below 50 percent on both topics.
- Immigration: 30% approve – 59% disapprove
- Employment and the economy: 41% approve – 51% disapprove
Overall, just 40% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance, well below the 50% threshold historically required for incumbents to win re-election.
