Americans increasingly view China as an “enemy” of the United States, according to a new survey.
investigationA Pew Research Center survey found that 42% of Americans say they consider China an “enemy” of their country, an increase of 4 points from the same time last year. In both years, only 6% of Americans surveyed said they considered China a “partner” of their country.
Additionally, the majority of Americans have a “very unfavorable” or “somewhat unfavorable” view of China, at 81%, and 83% of Americans surveyed said the same. The answer was a slight decrease from last year.
President Biden recently had a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a follow-up to their meeting in California last year, which administration officials called a “check-in.”
“President Biden and President Xi agreed to take a few more calls, manage the relationship responsibly, and use that tool as a way to stay in close contact at the leadership level, which is very important in the Chinese system. “—on a more regular basis,” the official said.
The president also signed a $95 billion foreign aid package last week, including $8 billion in security assistance to thwart Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific.
The Pew survey was conducted April 1-7 among 3,600 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
