Small plane crashes in central Virginia, killing 2

Two people were killed when a small plane bound for South Carolina crashed in Virginia, authorities said.

Virginia State Police said in a news release that around 9 a.m. Sunday in Palmyra, the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a low-flying plane and an explosion, leading to the plane catching fire in a heavily wooded area. It was discovered that

The twin-engine plane departed from Manassas Regional Airport, about 111 miles northeast of Palmyra, and was heading to Georgetown County Airport in South Carolina, the FAA said in a statement.

Pilot dies in small plane crash near Georgia

Both the pilot and passenger of the privately owned 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A were killed, police said. Police identified the pilot as John W. Latham, 63, of Haymarket, and the passenger as Niiben CA Ivor, 73, of Burke.

Police said the cause of the accident is under investigation. It was raining lightly at the time of the crash.

Two National Transportation Safety Board investigators have begun documenting the scene and wreckage at the crash site, and it will be taken to a secure facility for further evaluation, the agency said in a statement. The NTSB asked for help recovering the engine, propeller and other aircraft parts.

The NTSB said parts began to separate from the plane as it was flying near Miles Jackson Road in Palmyra, and some parts have already been recovered from a debris field that stretches about three miles.
