There is no question that President Biden is extremely unpopular with voters. There are no polls that show his approval rating anywhere near the surface. Furthermore, when it comes to individual issues, Mr. Biden is seen to be out of touch with what the people want or support.
It has all the elements of a reenactment of the 1980 election, when President Ronald Reagan mopped the floor with President Jimmy Carter. Almost 10 points difference. But beyond that, there are no polls that suggest such an outcome, or anything close to it. why? Because while Biden’s policies are deeply unpopular, so are Donald Trump’s personally.
The election is still far away, so today’s vote is more of a checkpoint than anything else. And checkpoints aren’t as advantageous to Trump as you might think. Voters hate Biden’s policies, but they hate Trump as a person — not entirely, of course, but to the extent that everything is harder for the former president.
If that hatred weren’t real, Trump would be running away in the polls by now. Aside from abortion, there aren’t many issues on which Biden has popular support.
Mr. Biden is underwater in almost every respect. Regarding the economy, RealClearPolitics averages -18.6 percentage points.. Regarding foreign policy, the RCP average is -25.2 percentage points. On immigration and inflation, Biden scores -29.4 points and -29.5 points, respectively, and on the Israel-Hamas war, Biden scores a whopping -29.9 points.
Had this been any other year, or had the alleged Republican nominee been in a different year, this election would have been a bloodbath. But the year is 2024, and Donald Trump is expected to be the Republican nominee. There’s no way around it.
That’s why when you look at public opinion polls on various issues, there is a discrepancy between where people stand compared to the current president and who they tell pollsters they will vote for. , there is a large discrepancy.
Only Trump has increased in RCP average for presidents. 1.2% in national popular vote. Trump does better in battleground states. 6.2 point lead in Nevada, 0.6% lead in Wisconsin.
Depending on where you get your news and the political leanings of the people delivering it, you either think Trump is winning on foot or that Biden doesn’t need to dig his suitcase out of the warehouse. Become. But the truth lies somewhere in between.
Biden is highly disliked as president. People see him as either out of touch with what they care about or just wrong about the issues. He doesn’t seem to care though declare that opinion polls are uniformly wrong.
The truth is, the polls are correct and show that Biden is unpopular and Trump is hated. There is a difference between these two things.
With the general election polls so close, at least for now, a small majority of people would rather vote for someone they dislike than someone they think is bad at their job or wrong on an issue. It has been shown that there is.
The Trump era is viewed more favorably now by many people than it was then, and the economy is certainly viewed more favorably than the Biden era. The only unexplained variable is Trump himself.
Trump inspires people to love him or hate him. You won’t see much indifference. Biden, on the other hand, may be the same as the empty shoe – he hardly matters. This election will be about whether people’s dislike of Trump outweighs their preference for the outcome of his presidency over that of President Biden.
President Trump’s most ardent supporters will never understand this, just as Trump haters will never understand why people like him. But reality does not depend on whether any of us accept it or not.
If Trump can figure out a way to be a little less Trump-like, his chances of winning will increase significantly. Otherwise, things can slide in different directions.
It’s a strange campaign goal to alleviate someone’s hatred and annoyance, but Trump won by a wide margin on almost every issue. He himself is the main obstacle to many people voting for him. No matter how much hatred there is for Biden, this situation will not change. Because with President Trump, and it’s typical of President Trump, people separate Biden from the outcome.
Many people seem willing to abandon what they think are better policies in order to oppose someone they personally dislike. Biden is an afterthought, a nonentity who cannot really claim any authority other than not being Trump, even if he wins re-election.
I wish people would put aside their feelings about Trump. I support him, and as far as this issue is concerned, so do the American people. However, this election may not be an issue at all. If it turns out to be an election of character, Donald Trump will ultimately lose.
