Biden appoints UAW president to White House advisory council

President Biden on Friday announced plans to appoint two key labor leaders, including United Auto Workers (UAW) President Sean Fain, to his advisory council on international trade.

The White House announced that Fain and Brian Bryant, president of the International Union of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), would be appointed to the advisory group.

The President’s Export Council serves as the primary national committee advising the White House on international trade. The group discusses and works to resolve trade-related issues for business, agriculture, and labor.

Fein’s appointment is the latest example of a UAW leader emerging as one of Biden’s closest allies within the union. Biden walked the picket line with UAW members during last year’s Michigan strike, and Fein and the UAW group endorsed Biden for reelection in January, citing his solidarity with workers.

“The choice is clear: Joe Biden has bet on the American worker, and Donald Trump has slammed the American worker,” Fain said in announcing his endorsement. “We need to know who will sit in the most powerful seat in the world and help us win as a united working class.”
