The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has decided to cancel an award that was due to be given to actor Robert De Niro after he made a blistering criticism of former President Donald Trump.
Earlier this week, De Niro attended a press conference held by the Biden campaign outside the Manhattan Criminal Court where Trump’s business records trial was held.
During the press conference, De Niro angrily yelled that if Trump was re-elected, the US government would “be wiped off the face of the earth.” He also yelled at Trump supporters protesting the press conference, calling the former president’s supporters “clowns” and “gangsters.”
In response to De Niro’s comments, NAB said “Mr De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will distract attention from the charitable work the organisation wishes to highlight.”
“The event is proudly bipartisan, bringing people together from all political walks of life and celebrating the impactful work of our local broadcasters and partners,” the spokesperson said. Said of hill The statement said, “While we strongly support the right of all Americans to exercise free speech and participate in community service, it is clear that Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities have distracted attention from the philanthropic work we hoped to honor. In order to maintain the focus on our honorees’ service, Mr. De Niro will no longer attend the ceremony.”
De Niro was scheduled to receive the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award at a NAB event in Washington, DC on June 4, 2024.
President Trump issued a statement slamming De Niro for his tirade, saying, “Since entering politics at the urging of the unscrupulous Joe Biden, De Niro’s films, artistry and brand have significantly declined in value.”
The former president added that De Niro “looked very sad and sad” at the press conference.
