NYC swimmers seen cooling off inside public pool weeks before they are open for summer

Summer may not have started in New York yet, but people are already enjoying the pool.

A New York Post photographer captured two young people having a great time splashing around in a public pool in Queens, even though city pools aren’t set to open for another three weeks.

New Yorkers aren’t supposed to be able to cool off in the city’s 91 swimming pools until June 27, but two people defied city officials and the gates at Astoria Park Pool and took a dip.

The pair, wearing tank tops and shorts, can be seen sitting in knee-deep water and looking into the camera. It’s unclear how they got in the water, but no lifeguards were present.

“We want New Yorkers to be able to enjoy our pools safely this summer, and we ask that patrons only swim during operating hours when lifeguards are on duty,” a Department of Parks and Recreation spokesperson told The Post.

Most city pools are still empty this time of year, but Astoria’s pool was filled with water earlier than usual because of recent construction, a department official told The Post.

Since the end of May, swimming has been permitted at the beach with lifeguards on duty from 10am to 6pm every day.
