Claims Trump’s Conviction Will Help Him with Black Voters ‘Deeply Offensive’

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D-Md.) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that it’s “deeply offensive” to claim that the conviction of former President Donald Trump in New York’s business documents trial will boost his support among black voters.

“There’s a debate going on around the country about how we should treat a former president and how much importance we should attach to the fact that he’s a convicted felon. What’s your take on that?” host George Stephanopoulos said.

“Yes, I’ve heard the argument that the fact that he’s a convicted felon actually works to his advantage, that it works to his advantage especially in communities of color and African-American communities, but as the third African-American governor in the history of this country and the first elected governor in the history of my state, I can tell you that that’s a very problematic, very offensive argument,” Wes Moore said.

He added, “What resonates with the African-American community, and the community at large, is having someone, a president, who is looking to our future like President Biden. The fact that President Trump was convicted doesn’t make him someone that any community can relate to. It doesn’t make him someone that anybody can relate to any more.”
