Welcome to Origin II – a match between NSW and Queensland that is being played in Victoria. The first game was a bit of an anti-climax, though maybe not if you’re a Queenslander. A very early sending off for NSW meant they played the majority of the game with 12 players and they were already up against it to win and couldn’t really afford to have any further disadvantage. If I was coaching the Blues tonight I would probably recommend not trying to knock a player’s head off and finding yourselves down a player, but maybe that’s just me? Let’s see if they go for that tactic tonight.

Melbourne is proposed as a “neutral” venue, but in reality, it functions like a Queensland home game. If you ever encounter a Victorian who goes for the Blues, you will likely discover that they were secretly born in NSW and have been working hard to cover it up for many years. Anyone born in Victoria automatically hates NSW and so naturally becomes extremely passionate about the state of Queensland whenever this series comes around. Add to that the fact that Storm players generally originate from Queensland (or are good enough at pretending they are to fool the selectors) and this game is locked in as a Maroons fortress.

Of course, whether or not that makes a difference to the result is yet to be seen, but the Maroons will be embracing the home ground advantage, while the Blues will be using it to reinforce their underdog status (if you’re new to Origin, both teams will always claim to be the underdog at all times – this is extremely important to our culture).

Important Events

Latrell Mitchell has been one of New South Wales’ biggest additions and once again Jack Snape gives us all the information you need on the impact he will have on the game and what his presence on the field means for the Blues.

So what about these teams? You can always email me or tweet me, the links are at the top of the page.

After the disappointment of the first leg, New South Wales have made some big changes. Edwards replaces James Tedesco at fullback, Mitchell replaces Joseph Aukso-Suaali at centre and Moses replaces Nico Hinds at halfback. In the forwards, Cameron Murray replaces Cameron McInnes at lock. Hudson Yeo also comes off the bench for Connor Watson.

The Maroons have, as expected, remained much more settled after their strong showing, with the only change being the inclusion of Kaufusi and Capewell on the bench for Jaymaine Hopgood and Selwyn Kobbo.

There’s just over 30 minutes until kick-off, so make sure you’re hydrated and ready to go.

preamble

Megan Morris

Welcome to Origin II, NSW vs Queensland in Victoria. The first game was a bit anticlimactic, but Queenslanders might not agree. NSW were sent off early, meaning they played most of the game with 12 men and, already behind, couldn’t afford to get any worse. If I was coaching the Blues tonight, I’d recommend not smacking a player’s head off and losing a man, but maybe I’m the only one. Let’s see if they employ that tactic tonight.

Melbourne has been proposed as a “neutral” venue, but in practice it functions like a home game for Queensland. If you meet a Victorian who supports the Blues, you’ll find out they’re actually from New South Wales and have tried hard to hide it for years. Victorians automatically hate New South Wales, so they get super enthusiastic about Queensland whenever this series is played. That, plus the fact that Storm players are generally from Queensland (or are good at pretending to be to fool the selectors), cements this game as a Maroons stronghold.

Of course, whether it will make a difference to the outcome remains to be seen, but the Maroons will likely take advantage of home ground advantage and the Blues will use it to reinforce their status as underdogs (for those new to Origin, both teams will always claim they are underdogs, which is very important to our culture).

There’s just over an hour until kick-off, so grab a snack, settle in and get ready to head to Origin!
