Friedman said he “cried” after watching the debate between Biden and former President Trump.
“For America to have the best chance of thwarting the Trump threat in November, the president must step forward and declare that he will not run for reelection and will send all of his delegates to the Democratic National Convention,” he wrote.

Friedman argued that Vice President Kamala Harris has the right to compete for the top spot but wrote that “voters should be afforded an open process” to find Biden’s successor, leaving open the possibility that Democratic leaders could vie for the top spot before the Democratic convention on Aug. 19.
“A younger Joe Biden could have been that leader, but time has finally caught up with him,” Friedman wrote, “and that became painfully and inescapably clear on Thursday.”
