House Democrats circulating letter against early Biden nomination

Democratic caucuses are said to be concerned that the process is being rushed and are pressuring the party to delay President Biden’s planned nomination.

According to the New York Times, California Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman wrote a letter urging the party to postpone the nomination until the party’s convention in August.

The letter was also reportedly circulated to other Democratic lawmakers, expressing serious concerns about plans to hold a virtual roll call as early as July 21.

Huffman declined to comment on The New York Times’ letter but sharply criticized the party’s plan to endorse Biden before the Democratic National Convention.

“It’s a power play at the highest level to try to stifle debate and force this through,” Huffman told the outlet. “Such a heavy-handed move is not going to sit well with a lot of people.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Huffman’s office for comment.

A virtual Democratic vote to nominate Biden could come as early as mid-July.

Democrats will formally choose a candidate at their convention, while the Democratic National Committee will consider making a formal nomination. President Biden Two Democratic Party sources confirmed this to Fox News in mid-July.

Biden’s potential nomination date is July 21, the same day the Democratic National Convention’s credentials committee meets virtually.

As reported a few weeks ago, Democratic Party Officials have decided there will be no formal roll call at the convention, which begins Aug. 19 in Chicago.

A total of 1,976 delegates are needed to win the Democratic presidential nomination. Biden has won roughly 3,900 this year, and under the Democratic National Committee’s rules, those delegates are “pledged” to support Biden’s candidacy.

Biden has not indicated he plans to drop out of the race, but if he did, he would no longer have any delegates to back him.

If he withdraws, there will be an open convention, allowing Democrats to propose potential candidates and then vote until one candidate receives a majority of the delegate votes.
