MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Wednesday praised former President Donald Trump for defending Israel and promoting peace between Israel and neighboring Arab countries.
“The Israeli people and its prime minister remember very well the incredible support President Trump gave to the country during his term in office,” Israeli government spokesman David Mensah said.
Mensah was reacting to news that President Trump had reposted a message in support of Netanyahu following Saturday’s assassination attempt on the former US president.
Netanyahu expressed relief that Trump was alive and wished him a speedy recovery, adding: “This is an attack on America. It’s an attack on democracy, it’s an attack on all democracies.”
President Trump posted a video of Prime Minister Netanyahu on Truth Social on Tuesday.
Asked by Breitbart News whether this represented an improvement in relations between Trump and Netanyahu, which have been frosty since Netanyahu congratulated President Joe Biden on his 2020 election victory, Mensah said the US-Israeli relationship is “bipartisan,” but added:
None of us in Israel can forget the great contributions President Trump made to our country. He moved the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to the eternal capital, Jerusalem. We can also forget the great achievements of the Abraham Accords, which he promoted. Without President Trump, these great achievements would not have been possible. Therefore, former President Trump’s connection to Israel is well known.
As for moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, Mensah elaborated, “Many past presidents have promised to do that. President Trump is the one who has done it.”
He hastened to add that with the US in the middle of election season, it is important to note that support for Israel comes from both sides of the political aisle.
But he reiterated that Israelis recognize the “incredible support” that former President Trump has shown to Israel — not only in the past but “even during this war.” [against Hamas] Just like that.”
