Too Many New Laws Could Impair Americans’ Freedoms

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch said on “Fox News Sunday” this week that the United States has too many federal laws.

“I think it will be an eye-opener for the American people to think that so much of what we do is over-regulated and in many cases over-criminalized. Apparently you commit felonies every day, maybe without even knowing it,” host Shannon Bream said.

“I think that may be true. Some professors say that we have so many federal laws today that every American over the age of 18 commits a felony every day. And that’s happened in my lifetime. From 1970 to now, the number of federal laws has probably doubled. And that’s just counting the United States Code that Congress has passed, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg because federal agencies are so busy,” Gorsuch said.

“On the one hand, we need laws so that we can be free and safe, but on the other hand, too many laws also undermine our aspirations for freedom and equality, because we almost need laws to face the world,” he added.

“In my 18 years on the bench, I have seen case after case where the law unexpectedly hits people just trying to live their lives and provide for their families,” Gorsuch added.
