Olympic swimming finished yesterday, but it’s not over in the pool yet – artistic swimming starts today!
Artistic swimming, formerly known as synchronized swimming, is returning to the Summer Olympics for the 11th consecutive time, but this year’s event will be New Look and New Scoring System.
For the first time, up to two men were allowed to compete per team and several were expected to take part, but no men were selected for any of the eight-man teams from the 10 participating countries.
The 2024 Olympics will also see the debut of an acrobatic stage in the team competition. Until this year, the team competition consisted of two stages, a technical stage and a free stage, but this year the addition of acrobatics will allow the U.S. team to capitalize on the strengths of their aerial and platform routines and increase their chances of winning a medal. Each stage will be judged separately, but medals will be awarded to the three teams with the highest total scores on August 7.
The day after the team competition, a two-part duet competition will take place, in which all ten qualifying teams will select two swimmers to compete in a duet.
With just a week to go until the Olympics, there’s five days of artistic swimming to look forward to, all available to watch for free on Peacock or DIRECTV Stream.
