Josh Shapiro Claims Trump Took Away Women’s Freedom to Choose

The claim: President Donald Trump has “robbed millions of American women of the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies.”

Ruling: Error. The conservative Supreme Court returned the issue of abortion to the states.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) said Tuesday at a rally in his hometown of Philadelphia that President Trump has taken away women’s right to choose an abortion. The allegations came during a partisan speech in which Shapiro called Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), a “nutcase.” Shapiro was warming up the crowd before introducing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.

Shapiro may have been especially emotional given that he was the party’s leading candidate until left-wing, anti-Israel and possibly anti-Semitic voices within the party opposed his selection.

Either way, he was wrong.

Trump made no direct changes on abortion, but he appointed conservative justices to the Supreme Court he believed would be more likely to overturn decisions. Roe v. WadeThe 1973 ruling fundamentally established the right to abortion.

In 2022, the court Roe v. Wade In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health OrganizationHowever, the bill does not specifically say that women do not have the freedom to choose abortion; it simply leaves the issue up to each state to decide.

Shapiro knows that — or should know — because he proposed Walz sign a bill into law that will lift all restrictions on abortion in Minnesota in 2023 (and defund pregnancy counseling centers). DobbsAnd in Minnesota, there is nothing to prevent an abortion up until the moment of birth.

It is true that Trump has claimed credit for overturning the ruling. Roe v. WadeHe is proud to have seen pro-life laws passed in states that support them, but he explicitly refuses to support the idea of nationwide abortion legislation.

Trump is not taking away anyone’s freedom, Shapiro is simply repeating his point and following through.
