Thomas wore the flag draped over his shoulders as he rang the Olympic bell on Tuesday.
“It was incredibly fun and it really felt like I now have an Olympic gold medal,” Thomas told reporters about ringing the bell.
A lifelong American, Thomas was born in Atlanta, grew up in suburban Massachusetts and was educated in Texas, graduating from Harvard University where he studied neurobiology and global health, and then earned a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

During her time at Harvard, she won 22 conference titles in six different track and field events and became the first NCAA sprint champion in Ivy League history with her now-signature winning time of 22.38 seconds in the 200-meter race.

She won bronze and silver medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but looked to be a different kind of threat this year, running the 200 meters in the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials in June in a time of 21.78 seconds — the fastest in the world for the 2024 Games.
She ran a brilliant time to lead her country to a big win in the 200m semifinals in Paris as the United States looks to maintain its gold medal lead over China.

Thomas’ gold medal is one of five track and field medals the United States has won so far this Olympics, giving it 16 medals total.
As of this writing, the United States leads China in total gold medals, 25-24.
