A misleading Newsweek headline about Republican support for Senator Kamala Harris’ tip-free initiative was deemed “yet another reason to hate the media” online.
This publication is article Harris has renewed her support for banning tips on service and hospitality workers, after President Trump endorsed the policy in June, and on Monday published an article titled “Kamala Harris’ Tax Proposal Would Be Supported by a Majority of Republicans.”
“Given that recent polls show 68% of Republicans support the policy proposals, the plan could help convince Republicans unconvinced by Trump’s candidacy to support Harris in the November election,” Newsweek said.

While the headline implied support for Harris’ plan, the article itself acknowledged that the poll was conducted on July 29, before Harris’ announcement. The article also noted that the plan had previously been proposed by Trump and added to the Republican platform several months ago.
“A majority of Americans support a plan to eliminate the federal tax on tips paid to service industry workers, according to an exclusive Newsweek poll, illustrating why Kamala Harris backed a policy proposal first put forward by her opponent, Donald Trump,” the article read.

But the headline garnered the most attention, with X users accusing the publication of trying to spin Trump’s policies into a win for Harris.
“Because it’s Donald Trump’s tax proposal,” Spectator reporter Matthew Foldy wrote.
Iowa Rep. Carter Nordman agreed, saying, “Because that’s literally @realDonaldTrump’s tax proposal…”
“Harris stole this idea from Trump. It was not her suggestion. Even Newsweek finds this an outrageous position,” said McKinley Lewis, communications director for Rick Scott.
“Are you talking about Trump’s tax proposal?” commented conservative Chad Felix Green.
Twitchy’s Doug Powers joked, “‘Hey Google, give me one more reason to hate the media.'” Google:
“Shameless is not the word to describe it,” Red State reporter Bonchie wrote.
“Oh my goodness,” exclaimed former Republican congressional candidate David Giglio.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Newsweek and the article’s author, Julia Carbonaro, for comment. Fox News Digital has also reached out to the Trump campaign.
Trump himself has also attacked Harris, accusing her of stealing his plan after she presented her own proposal at a rally on Saturday.
“Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ period is over and she is beginning to lose ground in the polls, has simply copied my no-tip tax policy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The difference is, she won’t do it. She just wants it for political purposes! This is Trump’s idea. She has no ideas, she can only steal them from me,” he added.
The Trump campaign later coined the hashtag “#CopyCatKamala Sunday.”
