Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday outlined his vision for a second term for the middle class, including plans to cut energy prices in half, slash taxes and curb inflation.
President Trump has promised to “Make America Affordable Again,” directed his cabinet and government agencies to work together on a comprehensive effort to “beat inflation” and laid out a wide-ranging plan to embark on business-friendly tax and regulatory reforms aimed at revitalizing the economy.
Significant reduction in electricity bills
A key pillar of his economic policy is energy policy.
“I am announcing that under my leadership, the United States will commit to ambitious energy reduction goals. [and] Reduce your electricity bill by at least half within 12 months, up to [of] “18 months,” Trump vowed during a speech in Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday.
Trump, 78, has long outlined his intention to remove barriers to domestic oil production, including expanding permits and loosening regulations.
Trump also juxtaposes his energy policies with those of Vice President Kamala Harris, who has previously supported a broad stance on climate change, including support for the Green New Deal, a resolution to dramatically reform the economy and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
Among her supporters is the $10 trillion plan she proposed during the 2020 election campaign. “Central to our efforts to control the cost of living will be an all-out effort to end the Biden-Harris war on this thing called American energy,” he said. “We’re going to drill, baby, we’re going to drill.”
The 45th president blamed President Biden’s energy policies for contributing to worsening inflation, and he vowed that energy prices will “collapse” under his watch.
Controlling inflation
President Trump has signaled a government-wide effort to tackle inflation, which fell for a fourth straight month to 2.9% year-on-year in July but remains stubbornly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target threshold.
“On my first day back in the Oval Office, I will sign an executive order directing my Cabinet and agency heads to use every tool and authority available to defeat inflation and rapidly reduce consumer prices,” the 78-year-old former president declared.
Trump reeled off statistics showing how the costs of insurance, housing and other items have risen sharply for working-class Americans.
He also promised to focus on other areas where prices remain high, including through Cabinet efforts.
“Inflation is destroying our country. It’s destroying our families. We’re going to tackle everything from auto affordability to home affordability to insurance premiums to supply chain issues to prescription drug prices, and I’m going to direct my Cabinet to get results within the first 100 days, maybe much sooner,” Trump said.
Tax cuts
Trump repeated many of his commonly used campaign promises and promised further tax cuts.
This includes plans to eliminate tip taxes for workers. It will cost an estimated $250 billion. Harris snatched away Trump’s one-year hiatus over the weekend.
Social security taxes will also be abolished. It costs about $160 billion a year — and extend the tax cuts pushed through in 2017.
The tax cuts will go hand in hand with deregulation, which President Trump predicts will also help increase incomes for average Americans.
Border Enforcement
During his speech, President Trump also briefly mentioned his plans to crack down on illegal immigration and secure the border, thereby protecting American workers from cheap labor.
“she [flooding] “Our country has millions of low-wage immigrants,” Trump lamented, pointing out Harris’ mishandling of the border crisis.
Trump has signaled his intention to reinstate some of the immigration policies he implemented during his first term, such as the “Remain in Mexico” agreement, which allows migrants to await their trial in Mexico rather than be released onto U.S. soil.
A sort of rebuttal to Harris
Trump’s speech comes ahead of a speech Harris is scheduled to give in North Carolina on Friday, where she is expected to outline her own economic policies, including a plan to curb inflation.
“Kamala Harris has not ended our economic crisis; she has only made it worse,” Trump said in his speech. “I gave Harris and Biden an economic miracle, but they quickly turned it into an economic nightmare with their country-destroying policies, straight out of Kamala’s San Francisco liberal style.”
Polls generally show that Trump receives higher marks from voters than Harris on economic issues, with concerns about the cost of living remaining a top concern heading into the Nov. 5 presidential election.
Harris’ plan is expected to include a call for a nationwide ban on price gouging by companies and has also sought to distance herself from Biden on economic policy. According to Axios.
“Does anybody feel like they’re better off under Kamala Harris and Crooked Joe than they were under Trump? Has anything ever gotten cheaper under Kamala Harris and Crooked Joe?” Trump asked.
“Kamala will release her fake economic plan this week. [it] “It’ll probably be a copy of my plan, because that’s basically what she does,” he chided.
This is a reference to Harris’ call to “end the tax on tips” at a rally in Los Angeles last week, weeks after Trump first floated the idea.
