On the last Sunday in July, millions of Venezuelans headed to the polls to cast their vote in the presidential elections.

After a decade of steep economic decline and more than a quarter of the population leaving the country, the opposition had hoped that victory would bring an end to President Nicolas Maduro’s 11-year rule.

But that night, Venezuela’s dictatorial leader was declared the winner, with little evidence to back up his claim.
