Brooklyn Parents Raise Alarm over All-Male Migrant Shelter Near Private School

Residents of Brooklyn, New York, said “no one knew about it and no one agreed” to a shelter for immigrant men opening near the private Christian school their children attend.

“No one from the city told us that evacuation shelters were being built,” said the mother of three children.

“I was stopped in my pickup truck by locals who asked me if I knew a shelter for 400 men was opening around the corner from here. No one knew, not even the principal,” Edelstein complained.

The shelter is located in an old factory at 130 Third Avenue, and concerned members of the Third Avenue Block Association bring the action Cities, building owners, shelter operators; Assert The Brownstoner reported that using the land for residential purposes violates zoning laws.

According to International Women's Forum (IWF)City officials had been trying to speed up the opening of the shelters but had not followed environmental testing procedures and other building codes.

Edelstein also said claims by city council members that they had contacted schools and spoken with principals before opening the shelters were “simply not true.”

Her concerns about security risks following the opening of the shelter are not unfounded: She was seen trying to break into her car after suspected migrants were seen trying to break into her car while she was on her way to pick up her children from school.

“I was walking back to my car when a parent stopped me and told me that two guys [that] “The perpetrators walked alongside your car and tried to open your car door while you were at school and it looked like they were men from a nearby shelter,” she said.
