South Carolina women’s basketball star arrested on assault and kidnapping charges

South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball star Ashlyn Watkins was arrested Saturday on suspicion of assault and kidnapping.

The incident happened early Saturday morning at the University of South Carolina-Columbia residential center. To WLTX-TV.

Citing a warrant from the University of South Carolina Police Department, the station reported that Watkins assaulted the victim by “forcibly grabbing her face, pulling her arms and pushing her.”

The warrant states that Watkins not only picked up the victim and carried her against her will, but also “grabbed the victim by the head and walked her down the hallway, thus controlling the victim's movements and preventing her from leaving.”

The victim eventually broke free and pulled a fire alarm, according to the warrant. Police and firefighters responded to the scene, according to the alarm. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the warrant.

Watkins has not commented on the allegations.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina women's basketball team told The Associated Press that the school is aware of Watkins' arrest and is continuing to gather information.

Watkins was given $30,000 bail and was barred from contact with the victim and ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from the victim's home, workplace, school or place of worship, according to online records, but was allowed to travel out of state for basketball games and practice.

She is due to appear in court on October 25th.

Watkins and the Gamecocks won a national championship in 2023-24, when she will start her junior year after averaging 9.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.
