Political analyst and Democratic strategist James Carville on Tuesday called on Vice President Kamala Harris to distance herself from President Biden to effectively brand herself as the new and exciting candidate, and also said she should end her press conference drought.
“To be considered a viable freshman candidate, Harris must clearly break with Biden on the policy priorities that will define her presidency,” Carville wrote. Guest Essay From the New York Times.
Carville was one of the Democrats most vocal in calling for Biden to resign, particularly following his performance in a debate with former President Trump in June.

Carville gave Harris three pieces of advice to defeat Trump in the November debates, including that she should make Trump her own biggest opponent in future debates.
“In the Sept. 10 debate, Harris must achieve exactly what her campaign fears: keeping Trump Trump,” Carville wrote.
“She should let him interrupt her,” he continued, “and not just let him, but encourage him to spout crazy conspiracy theories about the last election. She should use her sense of humor at key moments to get on his nerves and show him he's not upsetting her. And she should welcome the personal attacks as a badge of honor.”

Carville wrote that Harris will have to “break away” from Biden on policy, especially in public settings like press conferences.
“Publish an extensive list of 'New Progress' policies detailing why she will address issues differently than the sitting president and what those changes will mean for the American people,” Carville wrote. “Then hold a press conference about it after the rally and stop media organizations from making a big fuss about the lack of access. Don't run from your differences with the president. Embrace them respectfully and honestly.”
Carville's third piece of advice to Harris was that she must demonstrate a “pro-growth” stance and make a clear stand against her previous policy positions, including on climate change, semi-automatic rifle buyback programs and health care.
