ABC News anchor Lindsey Davis, who co-moderated the presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, acknowledged that she had a motive for deciding to fact-check President Donald Trump.
In a new interview, Davis acknowledged that she and co-moderator David Muir fact-checked Trump because of concerns about President Joe Biden's performance in the June 27 debate. Of course, it was this debate that culminated concerns about Biden's declining cognitive abilities — concerns that seemingly motivated Democratic Party leaders to pressure Biden to step down as the party's presidential nominee.
“I am painfully aware that there is a stereotype that this moment cannot be covered fairly.”
“People are just shocked at the mere publication of the statement. [be] Candidate Biden and the moderators at the time raised objections,” Davis said. said Los Angeles Times.
Davis was conspicuous by his use of passive language in his remarks: “People were concerned” — but who specifically were concerned? “People were allowed to say it” — but wasn't that said by both candidates in the Biden-Trump debate? statement More than an hour?
Davis delivered a striking and controversial fact-check at the debate.
As the candidates debated abortion, Trump alluded to the fact that some states do not allow abortion. In fact, seven states, including Washington DC – I have No legal restrictions On abortion, Trump, in typical Trumpian rhetoric, alluded to Minnesota's extreme abortion policies and referenced Ralph Northam's horrifying comments about so-called post-birth abortions.
the All trueStill, Davis chose to fact-check Trump.
“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a newborn baby,” she interjects.
Strictly speaking, that's true: killing a baby after birth is murder, and murder is illegal. But Democrats like Harris refuse to say whether they support any restrictions on abortion. During the debate, Harris was asked if she supported restrictions on abortion, but she dodged the question entirely.
So the question is, do people who don't support any restrictions on abortion also believe that abortion should be legal under all circumstances and at any stage of pregnancy?
The problem with Davis’ fact check is that not only did it provide a false defense for Harris and the Democrats, Muir and Davis fact-checked Trump. onlyHarris made numerous falsehoods and lies, but most viewers were unaware of this because the host chose not to call her out.
The one-sided fact-checking, the host's frequent interruptions of Trump's remarks and the structuring of many of the questions led to accusations that ABC was biased against Trump.
Davis' comments to the Los Angeles Times seem to confirm that ABC was trying, through its editorial fact-checks (which were not themselves subject to live scrutiny), to prevent another disastrous debate performance from the Democratic candidates on stage.
On that point, Davis said She is in the same sorority as Harris. — I am aware of the accusations of bias, but I ignore them.
“I'm painfully aware that there's a stereotype that this moment can't be covered fairly,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “And anonymous Instagram people remind me of that every day.”
