San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents have reported an increase in migrant apprehensions in recent weeks — a nearly 25 percent increase from two weeks ago — and with the 2024 presidential election looming.
San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Officer Patricia McGurk Daniel posted weekly updates on social media detailing the arrests of at least 4,000 migrants, who reportedly came to the US from 53 countries.
That's an increase of more than 12 percent from a week ago, when police chiefs reported arresting 3,557 immigrants.
McGurk Daniel said a week ago that it had apprehended 3,063 migrants from 53 countries. This week's 4,000 migrant arrests represent an increase of more than 30 percent from the Aug. 28 report. This is the highest weekly report since mid-June, when it reported apprehending nearly 7,700 people from 71 countries.
The San Diego Sector led the nation in immigration apprehensions in August, arresting more than 14,000 migrants, according to an unofficial Border Patrol report reviewed by Breitbart Texas, down slightly from the 15,000 apprehensions in July.
The Biden-Harris administration recorded the lowest number of arrests under the Trump administration, with about 56,000 reported encounters in July and about 58,000 reported in August. In contrast, the lowest number of encounters with migrants under the Trump administration was in April 2020, when agents arrested just 16,182 migrants.
In February, a CBP official told Breitbart Texas that Mexico's efforts are not a long-term solution to the problem. “They are only slowing down migrants' arrival at the U.S. border,” the source said. “They are being pushed further south, slowing efforts to achieve the goal of them seeking asylum in the U.S.”
