Israeli airstrikes kill 16 in Gaza, including 4 children, Palestinians say

Palestinian officials said Israeli airstrikes killed 16 people in the Gaza Strip, including five women and four children.

An airstrike early on Monday destroyed a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing at least 10 people, including four women and two children.

Auda Hospital, which received the bodies, confirmed the death toll and said 13 more people were injured.

The dead included a mother, her child and five of her siblings, according to hospital records.

A separate attack on a house in Gaza City killed six people, including a woman and two children, according to the Civil Defense, an emergency service that operates under the Hamas-led government.

Israel says it targets only terrorists and accuses Hamas and other militant groups of operating in residential areas, putting civilians at risk.

The military rarely comments on individual attacks, which often kill women and children.

Gaza's health ministry said more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed almost a year since the war began with an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

Israel does not distinguish between combatants and civilians killed, but says just over half of those killed are women and children. It claims, without providing evidence, that it has killed more than 17,000 terrorists.

Israel's defence minister says time is running out to reach an agreement with Hezbollah to halt fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border

JERUSALEM — Israel's defense minister told his U.S. colleague that time is running out for an agreement with Hezbollah to halt fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border.

“Hezbollah's continued 'linking' with Hamas makes the prospects for an Agreed Framework in the northern region increasingly remote,” Defense Secretary Yoav Gallant told Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

“The trajectory is clear,” Gallant added in a statement released by his office on Monday.

Hezbollah began firing rockets and drones into northern Israel following the outbreak of the war in Gaza, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7.

Both militant groups are allied with Iran, and Hezbollah says it is acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Israel responded with airstrikes and the targeted killing of a Hezbollah commander, threatening a wider operation and raising fears of a new all-out war.

Hezbollah has said it would stop attacks if a ceasefire was reached in Gaza, but months of talks brokered by the United States, Qatar and Egypt have repeatedly stalled.

Hamas is demanding a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza as part of a deal to free scores of hostages still being held from the October 7 attack.

“In any scenario, Israel's defense posture will continue to operate with the goal of dismantling Hamas by any means necessary and ensuring the return of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza,” Gallant told Austin.
