New Georgia poll finds close race between Harris, Trump

With just 47 days left until Election Day, a new poll in Georgia shows a close race between Vice President Harris and former President Trump.

Fresh voteAccording to a poll released Wednesday morning by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Trump (47%) has a slight lead over Harris (44%) among voters in the state. About 7% of Peach State voters say they are undecided, while independent presidential candidate Cornel West and other third-party candidates receive less than 1% support.

The former president maintains strong support among the state's Republican base, and surveys have shown that more than 90% of Georgia Republicans and about 65.4% of the state's white voters support his third bid for president.

The poll showed the vice president was gaining support among independents, with 50.4% backing her candidacy, compared with 34.1% who back Trump.

She also won the support of about 77 percent of the state's Black voters, less than the party needs in a state that President Biden won narrowly — by fewer than 12,000 votes — in 2020. About 12 percent of Black voters said they were undecided, according to the survey.

About 48% of respondents said they had a favorable view of the Democratic candidate, according to the survey. An equal number said they had an unfavorable view, according to the survey. Among Republican voters, about 51% of the state's voters have an unfavorable view of Trump, slightly more than the 46% who have a favorable view.

Inflation and the cost of living were the top issues for Georgia voters, cited by 27%. About 18% said the economy was most important heading into November, while 15% said preserving democracy was important, according to the poll.

According to the Hill/Decision Desk Composite Polling Index, Trump is leading the Peach State with 48 percent approval, ahead of his Democratic opponent at 47.7 percent.

The AJC poll, conducted by the University of Georgia's School of Public and International Affairs among 1,000 voters from Sept. 9-15, has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
