Newsmax political analyst Mark Halperin said Wednesday that the media's ignoring of inflammatory rhetoric from Democrats could play a major role in former President Donald Trump's election victory.
Some liberal media outlets and commentators have suggested that Trump bears responsibility for the alleged assassination attempt on him last Sunday by Ryan Wesley Routh. Halperin told National Report that Americans see the media's “double standards” as “outrageous” and that it could help his reelection campaign “if Trump is still alive.” (Related: Dana Bash claims second assassin's 'anti-Trump posts' have 'nothing to do with Kamala Harris or Joe Biden')

“Both sides use inflammatory rhetoric. Donald Trump uses more inflammatory rhetoric than anyone I've ever interviewed,” Halperin said. “But the issue, beyond the fact that it's Trump who is being physically assaulted, is that the media shouldn't arbitrarily hold people equally accountable to the extent that they're completely unequally accountable for it. But to ignore the inflammatory rhetoric that was widely promoted by the Trump campaign, to ignore the inflammatory rhetoric of the Democrats, to act as if it's just one side, and then say that side should get what they deserve, is why many Americans have no respect or appreciation for the dominant media.”
“And that's a big reason why Donald Trump might win the election if he were alive today, because people will see how terrible the double standards are,” he added.
Far from toning down her rhetoric following Sunday's assassination attempt, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday accused the media of not doing enough to report on the “danger” that Trump poses to “our country and the world.”
One of Routh's posts on X echoed repeated assertions by Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden that in 2024 “democracy will be on the ballot.” According to Speaking to The Associated Press, CNN's Dana Bash claimed Monday that the would-be assassin's “anti-Trump posts” “had nothing to do with Kamala Harris or Joe Biden.”
Routh appears to have donated to the Democratic Party while living in Hawaii. According to Federal campaign finance records.
