A new Fox News poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump by just two points, within the margin of error.
The survey of 1,102 registered voters was conducted between Sept. 13-16 and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. According to the poll Kamala Harris has seen her approval rating improve by three points since August, the day the two candidates held their first presidential debate and the second assassination attempt on Trump took place.
“Last month, Trump had a one-point lead, but Harris today leads by two points: 50 percent to 48 percent,” Fox News noted. “For reference, in July, Trump had a one-point lead over President Biden. Both of these margins are within the margin of error.”
“This is the first time Ms. Harris has reached 50% approval rating, and primary voting results were the same among registered and likely voters. This is not surprising, given that the majority of Americans who are willing to spend time researching politics will probably vote,” Fox News added.
As the report points out, the second assassination attempt on former President Trump occurred just three-quarters of the way through the poll, so it's unclear how it may have affected the current polls. Most importantly, the polls show Kamala Harris has solidified support among independents and Hispanics.
“Hispanics supported Trump by 6 points in August but now support Harris by 12 points. Independents supported Trump by 8 points last month but now support Harris by 12 points,” the report noted.
Republican pollster Daron Shaw said the poll bodes well for former President Trump in the Electoral College, given that Hillary Clinton beat Trump in the popular vote by two points in 2016.
“Our best guess is that if Trump is within two points of Harris nationally, he's likely to win the Electoral College vote,” Shaw said. “These data showing Trump's leads in key counties and battleground states suggest that's probably the case.”
As Breitbart News reported on Wednesday, a separate Gallup poll showed that President Trump's approval rating has increased, while Kamala Harris's has fallen since August.
“The poll suggests that Trump is gaining momentum in the most crucial months before Election Day, overcoming the so-called 'honeymoon' period experienced by Harris, who garnered zero votes in the Democratic primary and replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the shortlist,” the report said.
