Kamala Harris Claimed in 2019 Trump Would Provoke War with Iran

Then Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow in 2019 that then-President Donald Trump would be responsible for the dangerous escalation with Iran.

The video resurfaced on Tuesday after Iran fired 181 ballistic missiles toward Israel. It was the second similar missile attack by Iranian proxies after a year of attacks on Israel.

Harris met with Maddow in the wake of Iranian missile attacks on Saudi oil fields, which many expected would lead to a U.S. response. (President Trump called off the airstrikes.) Harris criticized Trump for not being tough enough on Saudi Arabia. (After taking office, she and Biden withdrew support for Saudi Arabia, emboldening Iran and Yemen's Houthis.)

of transcript looks like this:

HARRIS: And, again, listen, as far as I'm concerned, this president is motivated more by personal insecurities than national security. So what we're looking at are threats that can still be taken seriously. And I — and I would venture to say that that threat was issued without serious consultation with allies, military leaders, diplomatic leaders. What are our alternatives?

And let me be clear: If this president is considering putting us at war with Iran, that outcome is absolutely unacceptable for the young men and women of American soldiers who will be sent there. It would be a tragic thing. And it unfolded into something completely avoidable.

MADDOW: If you believed, if you were the president now, and you came to believe that Iran carried out this act – and again, we're going to look at the president's claims on these things. , the government has a claim, but we don't. I didn't see any evidence. But if the president of the United States becomes convinced that Iran has shot these missiles at Saudi Arabia to ruin oil production, then the U.S. will have Saudi Arabia as if it were America. Would we approach it as if we had a military responsibility to stop it? There is an assumption that they will, but will that be true in a Harris administration?

HARRIS: Well, with a Harris administration, first of all, we wouldn't be in this mess. We would have remained part of the partnership that was part of the Iran nuclear deal, and we would have remained part of the partnership going forward. our words. And we would have maintained our end of the bargain.

Also, let's take a step back and look at this president's relationship with Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia. Did you know that this president has issued a total of five vetoes during his time in the White House? Four of those were related to Saudi Arabia.

In 2020, then-candidate Joe Biden and Harris both opposed When President Trump ordered an airstrike that killed Iranian terror general Qasem Soleimani. Iran's weak response showed the administration's deterrence, and many Democrats' dire predictions that President Trump had started a new war did not come true.
