Texas Border-Area School Board President Pleads Guilty to Drug Conspiracy Charges

The president of a Texas border school board has pleaded guilty to his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy. The plot involved key members of the city's political leadership. The guilty plea came just a week after the city's mayor also pleaded guilty to the same charges.

This week, Francisco “Frank” Alaniz, 41, former president of the Progreso Independent School District and assistant to the Progreso City Manager, appeared before a federal district court judge in Brownsville, Texas. He pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy charges, but prosecutors dismissed other charges in the case against him. Alanis is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

The guilty plea comes just a week after former Progreso Mayor Arturo Aleman pleaded guilty to the same charges, Breitbart Texas reported.

Gerald “Jerry” Alanis is also named in the case. He was mayor of Progreso at the time of his arrest, but has since left that position. He has not pleaded guilty and is scheduled to go to trial later this year.

According to report According to CBS4's Dave Hendricks, Frank Alaniz provided funds to members of an anonymous drug lord so they could buy tractor-trailers to transport cocaine from small border cities to other cities up north. I admitted that I did it.

The Alaniz brothers made headlines in 2023 when local news broke a video of them bragging to authorities about carrying large sums of cash and a Rolex with them when they returned from Mexico. The news report dealt with the Alanis brothers being detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for being intoxicated while entering the country. However, local authorities released them with minor citations.

The drug trafficking case against the Alanis brothers and nine other suspects comes after federal authorities arrested Progreso ISD school bus driver Jose Rosbel Salas in 2020 after finding more than 30 kilograms of cocaine in his vehicle. It has begun.
