California man Saul C Nava convicted of nine felony counts from the murder and torture of his girlfriend

A California man was convicted Tuesday of nine felonies in connection with the 2021 murder and torture of his girlfriend.

The jury found Saul C. Nava, 24, guilty of first-degree murder, torture, kidnapping, aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, bodily injury to a current/former spouse/cohabitant/fiancée, and possession of child pornography. was found guilty of the crime.

Officials said Nava tortured his girlfriend for several days before killing her on Christmas Eve. He then called 911.

Police responded to a call and discovered a gruesome crime scene at Nava's studio apartment in Thousand Oaks.

Nava tortured Arisen Tacacs-Escobar, 24, for several days, leaving her with injuries all over her body. She had extensive bruising and a large laceration on the top of her head.

The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced that she has a new tattoo of “degrading language” in the center of her chest.

Police said Nava used tattoo instruments, a baseball bat, a hammer, a belt and a screwdriver to torture his girlfriend.

Nava's cell phone was found in the apartment. In the hours leading up to Nava's death, he recorded a video on his cellphone that showed him “teasing her and showing indifference to her worsening symptoms.”

Takacs-Escobar replied, “I'm scared. I'm really scared. I'm scared.”

Nava was arrested at his apartment.

The Ventura County Coroner's Office found that Takacs-Escobar died of blunt force trauma and ruled her death a homicide.

The deadly attack allegedly occurred weeks after Nava became aware of phone messages between Takacs-Escobar and his ex-girlfriend.

A police witness described the messages as “flirty” and talking about their past sexual relationship.

Prosecutors said the two had no sexual relationship at the time.

Nava said she knew the two had no physical contact, but considered the flirting to be cheating.

Nava's ex-girlfriend told authorities that when she was a teenager, Nava physically abused her and kept her in a closet.

At one point during the relationship, the ex-girlfriend allegedly tried to run away, but Nava caught him and threatened him with a knife until he got into her car.

Her ex-girlfriend became pregnant when she was 17, but said Nava punched her in the stomach and forced her to have an abortion. She said Nava punched her in the face, strangled her and secretly filmed their sex life.

Sofia Nuno is Takac Escobar's friend from high school. testified Her friend said that before she started dating Nava, she was “very friendly, cheerful, happy, and outgoing,” but that her behavior changed after she started dating him.
