Massachusetts governor: State police would not assist in mass deportations

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) said her state's law enforcement agencies would not support mass deportations if President-elect Trump followed through with such a plan.

“No, absolutely not,” Healey told MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell on Wednesday when asked if Massachusetts would help if the Trump administration requested it.

“But let me say this: I think it's important that we all recognize that there's going to be a lot of pressure on states and state officials. We're going to have to work hard to make that happen. I assure you that I will try hard.”

Much of President Trump's agenda over the past eight years has focused on immigration. On the first day of his second term, he promised to launch “the largest deportation program in American history.”

Healey said a lawsuit against President Trump's plan is likely.

“What's important here is that every tool in the toolbox is used to protect our people, to protect our residents, to protect our state, and to make sure that we uphold democracy and the rule of law as fundamental principles. 'I think so,' she said.
