Democratic state legislators in New York are calling on a coalition of northeastern states to secede from the Union and join Canada, citing President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House.
State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-28) also plans to withhold more than $300 billion in federal taxes. defended her thoughts during a conversation with politiko.
“It's not unreasonable to think outside the box,” Senate Finance Committee Chairman Krueger told the outlet.
Kruger, September spoke Trump spoke to City and State New York.com about the withdrawal of four states from the Union, which would result in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut joining Canada if he wins.
I know Canada basically said, “Yeah, if he wins, we're not going to let everyone in.'' As individuals, they basically revealed it. But that's why I thought, “Oh, why do I have to leave this country?” I love this country, and if Trump wins a second term, it won't really be my fault or the people of New York's fault. ” So I thought I would suggest to Canada that instead of all of us trying to cross the border illegally at night without being noticed, they should agree to make us a southeastern province. I proposed that New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont would be combined into a great new state in southeastern Canada, even though we had not yet received consent from the other states.
“Essentially all the people in these states are progressive Democrats,” she argued, “and would fit fairly well with the political philosophy of at least the majority of elected officials in Canada.”
Krueger, whose district includes the Upper East Side and midtown Manhattan, has pitched the idea to his connections who say politicians in Ottawa might support it.
I suggested that this could be an option and got some informal responses and heard that this could probably sell in Ottawa. If we were Europe, if we were a country over the long period of time that we have traveled as a nation, if we were Canada, if we were a European country, we would have moved our borders about 20 times by now, right?
While Mr. Krueger is plotting to counter Mr. Trump in every possible way, Mr. Trump has made it clear that he is willing to work with the New York Democratic Party to bring New York back to greatness.

At a historic packed rally at Madison Square Garden in the run-up to the election, Trump said: said He wants to help make New York “safe, strong, beautiful, affordable and vibrant again.”
He added that he will work with Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) and Mayor Eric Adams (D-N.Y.) to make that happen.
