An undocumented immigrant accused of shooting an Orthodox Jewish man multiple times as he walked to a synagogue in Chicago was found dead in his jail cell in an apparent suicide.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday that Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, died by suicide after hanging himself in his cell. fox 32.
The sheriff's office said in a statement: “There were no signs of suicidal risk prior to the incident.”
Abdallahi, a Mauritanian national, was discovered by Cook County Jail staff during a routine security check Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Staff attempted life-saving measures after finding Mr. Abdallahi unresponsive. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff's office said there was no sign of foul play.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death.

Abdallahi is in jail in connection with an Oct. 26 shooting near the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue in which a 39-year-old man wearing a kippah was seen on his way to a synagogue. Injured an Orthodox Jewish man.
The victim was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

When first responders arrived to rescue the victims, they reportedly came under fire after Abdallahi was identified as the suspect. Chicago police returned fire, seriously injuring Abdallahi, who was later arrested and hospitalized after being shot multiple times. No first responders were injured in the incident.
Abdallahi was charged with multiple charges, including terrorism, hate crimes, six counts of attempted first-degree murder, and seven counts of aggravated shooting of a police officer or firefighter.
