President-elect Donald Trump has promised to abolish birthright citizenship as one of his first acts in office. But he also expressed a desire for Dreamers to remain in the United States despite their illegal immigrant status.
During a Friday interview with Kristen Welker.”meet the press,President Trump detailed his strategy for mass deportation and confirmed his “Day 1” plan to abolish birthright citizenship.
“Then the people turn against us. But we have to do our job.”
Mr. Welker asked President Trump whether he intended to use the president's actions to accomplish this goal. 14th Amendmentstates that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are nationals of the United States and the state in which they reside.”
Trump replied, “We're going to have to get it.” [birthright citizenship] It has changed. Maybe we have to go back to the people. But it has to end. We are the only ones who have it. ”
He said he was open to using administrative action.
President Trump noted the long legal battles that precede the deportation of illegal aliens, saying, “Every time someone steps two feet, or even a foot, on our land, we welcome a lengthy lawsuit.'' ” he said.
“In other countries, in any country, if you see someone walking and they know they're here illegally, they chase them away and take them back to where they came from,” he added.
“We have to abolish this system. It's ruining our country,” President Trump declared.
The president-elect also discussed plans to deport families together, reinforcing comments made by incoming border czar Tom Homan.
Homan previously addressed concerns about family separation under the Trump administration, saying there was no need to separate families because they could be deported en masse.
Asked about family separation, President Trump told Welker, “I don't want to separate families. So the only way to keep families from being separated is to keep them together and send them all back.”
“So there will be no more family separation?” Welker asked.
He explained that families have two options. Either families can be deported en masse, or those who are legally in the U.S. remain and other members without legal status leave the country.
“Well, it's up to the family. They might say, 'I want my dad to go, we'll stay here,' and they still have that option,” Trump said. I complied.
He predicted that traditional media would use his mass deportation efforts to turn the public against him.
“I'll show you what's scary when you take a wonderful young woman with a criminal,” he continued. “And they showed a woman, and she was able to comply with the law, but they showed a woman being taken out. Or they wanted to take her out of our country. The camera focuses on her crying as she is taken away. And then, “The people are against us, but we must do our job.'' ”
Welker pressed the president-elect about his plans for Dreamers, individuals without legal status who immigrated to the United States as children.
President Trump said his administration will immediately focus on deporting illegal aliens who have committed crimes.
“The Dreamers are going to come later, but we have to do something about the Dreamers because they are people who were brought here at a young age, and many of them are now middle-aged. They can't even speak their national language,'' he said.
President Trump insisted that Republicans are “very open” and vowed to “work with Democrats to come up with a plan” to address the Dreamers issue.
When asked if he wanted Dreamers to remain in the United States, President Trump said, “I do.”
