A new scheme that allows families to sign up for free school meals means we can now feed an additional 20,000 children.
The 'Auto Enrollment' pilot project is not only preventing these children from going hungry, but also saving households hundreds of pounds a year.
A total of 20 local authorities in England have decided this year to identify eligible pupils and register them without waiting for their parents to register. York University, which led the initiative, said it found a further 40 local authorities were considering automatic registration.
The scheme is also generating millions of pounds of extra funding for schools. That's because the Pupil Premium Grant, which aims to help schools cater for disadvantaged pupils, is linked to the number of children claiming free school meals, and is £1,455 per primary school child, £1,035 per primary school child. A record 2.1 million children are now eligible for free school meals, representing around a quarter of all pupils. The Government has pledged to triple investment in Breakfast Clubs to more than £30m a year in the 2025-26 financial year. The government announced last month that up to 750 schools will be provided with funding to set up free breakfast clubs, with schools participating in the “early adoption scheme” providing meals on a “free and universal” basis from April 2025.
