A Tesla Cybertruck is completely engulfed in flames in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to dramatic footage posted on social media.
Video footage posted to X on New Year's Day shows an electric truck made by Elon Musk's Tesla catching fire in front of President-elect Donald Trump's Las Vegas compound. It remains unclear how the Tesla Cybertruck came to its violent end, but authorities are reportedly calling the incident an “active crime scene.”
See below:
The video, taken from inside the Trump International Hotel, shows a Tesla Cybertruck on fire, with smoke billowing into the air and what appears to be several explosions. The explosion may have occurred when individual battery cells overheated and exploded, a phenomenon common in EV fires known as “thermal runaway.”
It remains unclear how the electric car burst into flames, but a man off-camera can be heard speculating that the battery may have died.
However, independent journalist Nick Souter said police were calling the incident an “ongoing crime scene”, adding that “multiple injuries have been reported”.
Fire officials are calling on regulators to raise awareness of the dangers of electric vehicle battery fires and raise electric vehicle safety standards for emergency responders. One fire chief called electric cars “prank birthday candles” because they tend to rekindle fires even after they go out.
