President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to restore sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) and punished international organizations and their officials if they attempt to pursue Americans and US allies.
President Joe Biden had overturned the sanctions Trump had imposed on the ICC in his first term. This allowed the ICC to pursue leaders in America and Israel. In particular, they were able to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement accompanied by his order, Trump I said:
I, President Donald J. Trump of the United States, engaged in non-giatial and unfounded actions by the International Criminal Court (ICC), established by Roman law, targeted the US and our close ally, Israel. I discovered there was. The ICC has argued for a preliminary investigation into US officials and certain allies, including Israel, with no legal basis, claiming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yove Gallant. As neither country is a member of Roman law or the ICC, the ICC has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel. Neither country recognizes the ICC's jurisdiction, and both countries are thriving democracy with military forces that adhere to war laws. The ICC's recent actions against Israel and the United States set dangerous precedents and ex-US officials, including active service members of the military, by exposing them to the possibility of harassment, abuse and arrests. It was put directly in danger. This malicious act threatens to infringe on US sovereignty and undermine the important national security and foreign policy activities of our allies, including the US government and Israel.
…
The United States expressly opposes and expects its allies to oppose the ICC's actions against the United States, Israel, or other US allies that do not agree to ICC jurisdiction. While the United States continues to be committed to peaceful cultivating accountability and international order, the ICC and the parties to Roman law, in agreement with each, decide the US and other countries that are not in charge of the ICC's jurisdiction. We must respect. The privilege of sovereignty.
The United States imposes specific and serious consequences on those responsible for ICC violations. Some of this may include blocking property and assets and halting ICC officials, employees and agents from entering the United States. Like their near-kinds, their entry into our country would be detrimental to the interests of the United States.
The order came during Netanyahu's visit to Washington, DC, but even some Western countries to arrest him under an ICC warrant were a welcome gesture given the threat of Western countries. It must be.
