Trump Can Shut Down FEMA, ‘We Don’t Need This Bureaucracy’ Picking Winners

Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem said Sunday in CNN's “Union State.”

Host Dana Bash said: And he said so in response to the suggestion to shut down FEMA completely. Of course, FEMA is funded by Congress, but has it been repeatedly approved by law, including that Donald Trump should shut it down by the laws you voted for when you were in Congress? ”

Noem said, “He can. And I believe he will give his team a rating and that. And he's talking about it, I'm grateful for it. But he Works with Congress to make sure it's done right and we are still there to help those who have terrible disasters and crisis in their lives. makes it very clear that the federal government still believes there is still a role to help people get up and get up, but there is a lot of fraud, waste and abuse. President Trump takes over and on this administration Now that we're back, we've seen an incredible change.”

Bash said, “What is your recommendation for him?”

Noem said: I was the governor and when I was the governor of South Dakota, we were hit by our state and saw 12 FEMA-related natural disasters. So I know that from that level. And I knew every time I and my local County Emergency Management Director, Mayor, City Council and county commissioners made decisions much better than the people of Washington, D.C.

Bash said, “If the president comes to you and says you're my DHS secretary, do you think I should get rid of FEMA? What do you say?”

“Yes, if we remove FEMA in the way that it exists today, we still need resources, funds, finances, to go to people with these types of disasters, such as Hurricane Helen and the California fires. But It can be deployed more quickly because local officials need to make decisions about how it will unfold, and there is no need for this bureaucracy, which is picking and choosing winners.”
