Mayor Eric Adams is set to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration next week after the federal government secretly threw more than $80 million in immigration funds from New York City's financial resources, according to a letter obtained by the Post Office.
Adams administration lawyers said on Friday that city director Brad Lander had a federal emergency management campaign to help the city's legal department take legal action by February 21st. He said he was trying to collect the department's payments.
“The Legal Bureau is currently drafting litigation documents on the matter,” said a letter written by the corporation's lawyer, Mulayle Good Turphant.
“We intend to take legal action by February 21, 2025. As the Legal Department represents New York City on this issue, the Secretary's office has no permission to attract outside lawyers.”
The letter only hours after Lander asked him to grant him permission to file a lawsuit against the Adams administration or to hire his own lawyer to file a lawsuit against Trump and the government efficiency Hongcho Elon Musk. It was sent later.
“Given the severity of the situation, we can't afford to waste any more time,” said Lander, who faces Adams in the Democratic mayoral primary in June. He said in a statement Friday.
“If the mayor prefers to spend his days moving forward with President Trump's agenda rather than fighting for New Yorkers, then the Legal Department must allow me to do so.”
The sudden withdrawal of the FEMA fund from its New York City accounts unfolded Tuesday without Adams' knowledge and was released the following morning by Lander, who denounced Trump and the wealthiest man in “highway robbery.”
Musk claimed this week that Doge “discovered” its $59 million FEMA payment to Big Apple “to house illegal immigrants at a luxury hotel in New York City.”
Trump later reflected his remarks when defending the seizure, claiming that “massive fraud” was happening.
New York City scrambled for federal help to pay for shelter for immigrants that flowed across the US-Mexico border, making $58.6 million and 21.9 million under the Biden administration. Two separate grants of dollars were applied and awarded. Federal employee.
City Hall officials gently rebutted mask claims, only $19 million to point out that to refund past costs for hotel housing immigration and that it came from money approved by council. It points out that it is not used.
The payments will be to help local governments, including New York City, to support the massive costs of the immigration crisis, which is now $7 billion, by Congress, to allocate $650 million in 2024. It was carried out under the Shelter and Services Program.
FEMA money, funded by the US Customs and Border Patrol, offers a refund of $12.50 per night per hotel room, and city officials say most of the 150 hotels the city uses to house immigrants. He added that it is not a luxurious accommodation.
The remaining money will be spent on security, food and other services for immigrants, officials said.
Until Friday, it was unclear whether Adams would take legal action against Trump.
The Justice Department ordered prosecutors to withdraw federal corruption cases against the mayor, and ordered them in a move that feared that Hizaner's allies would “take him hostage” to the new president.
