Mexican authorities handed over two of Los Zetas's top leaders just hours before the country's security cabinet was set up to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his staff.
On Thursday morning, Mexican authorities working with US authorities handed over Los Zetta's supreme leader, Miguel Angel “Z-40” Trevino Morales and his brother “Z-42” Trevino Morales. Both men face multiple drug trafficking and money laundering fees in the United States. The two had been in Mexican custody for years, fighting extradition and ruled the criminal empire from behind the prison, according to law enforcement sources.
Details of the delivery remain unknown. However, on Thursday morning, the Webb County Sheriff's Office issued a warning confirming the extradition, warning Laredo residents to be vigilant due to possible cartel violence taking place on the Mexican side of the border. In the warning, the sheriff's office said that Los Zetas' Cartel del Noreste faction tends to respond with extreme violence, putting locals at risk. The message was subsequently deleted.
The extradition is set to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others at a meeting of the Closure Corps, which aims to alleviate the Trump administration's tariff pressure and threats on Mexico.
Cartel del Noreste, or Los Zetas, is one of six Mexican cartels recently designated as foreign terrorist organizations by President Donald Trump and the US State Department, as reported by Breitbart Texas.
As news of the extradition spread in Mexico, Juan Manuel Delgado, one of the lawyers representing the Trevino Morales brothers, conducted various television and radio interviews. Among them, he argued that his clients were still in the process of being extradition trial and that attempts to hand them out were illegal.
