Former White House press secretary Carine Jean Pierre said in ABC's “view” Tuesday that President Donald Trump's actions against the White House pool since inauguration are like state television in an authoritarian regime.
Jean Pierre said: “If you look at the Associated Press, they are the oldest wires in the press room. And you think about journalists, you think about why they are in the press briefing room, you think about why they are in the pool, it's called a protective pool, there are 13 members of the pool – I'm trying not to get too unsettled here – and their job is to provide unbiased information to the American people because Americans deserve it. And when the White House press team decides to step in and override the White House correspondents association, they have the job of doing it, and what we're watching is the TV in the state. What we're watching is what Russia is doing. What we're watching is what North Korea is doing. And we're doing – they're attacking the fiber of press freedom. They want to be covered in a friendly way, so they're destroying it.”
She added: What do we want to do? And it is the exercise of democracy. It is the cornerstone of democracy: freedom of the press. It is the fourth estate and we are supposed to lead it as the most powerful nation in the world. ”
