Senator Freshman Slotkin (D-Mich.) began his address for almost ten minutes by pointing out a commonality between herself and 47.th The president said they won her old parliamentary district in the 2024 election despite being in different political parties.
“It may not seem like that, but there are many places like this still in the US,” Slotkin said. “If you work hard and play with the rules, where people believe, you should do well, your kids should do better.”
Slotkin went on to claim that he made it clear that Americans wanted change.
“But there are responsible and reckless ways to make change, and we can make that change without forgetting who we are as a nation and as a democracy,” she said. “Changes don't need to be confusing or keep us safe.”
When discussing the topic of economics, Slotkin argued that Trump's economic plans didn't help Americans move forward every day.
“Look, the president has spoken about the big game about the economy, but reading the fine print is always important. So does his plan actually help Americans move forward?” Slotkin said.
The 48-year-old then criticized Doge and his mission to prevent American taxpayers from funding non-critical government agencies, including excessive government staffing.
“The American CEO couldn't get away without being fired immediately,” she said.
Slotkin continued to attack Trump and his recent clash with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky. She said former President Ronald Reagan was “rolling in his grave” over Trump's oval office meeting with Zelensky.
“President Trump loves to say peace through strength,” Slotkin said. “It's actually a line he stole from Ronald Reagan. But after the sight that happened last week in an oval office, Reagan must be lying in his grave.”
“As a child of the Cold War, I'm grateful that it was Reagan and not Trump in the 1980s,” continued Slotkin. “Trump would have lost the Cold War to us.”
The senator concluded her speech by asserting that there are many Americans who feel frustration towards their representatives.
“Take the elected officials, including me, accountable. See how they vote. Go to City Hall and demand action. It's as American as apple pie,” she said.
She also urged Americans to get involved.
“Pick one issue you're passionate about and involved. And Doom Scrolling won't count. Join a group that cares about your problem and take action. If you can't find it, start. Some of the most important moves in our history come from the bottom up,” Democrats said.
Before her speech, the Trump administration issued a statement detailing Slotkin's voting history.
They say she voted to end Trump's emergency declaration at the southern border in 2019 and voted against overturning the Biden administration's tailpipe emissions rules.
Trump's team described Slotkin as a politician of Touch.
