California delegation pushes for Los Angeles County wildfire aid

A California Legislature delegation urged Congress to approve federal funds to support recovery efforts after the Los Angeles County wildfires destroyed communities in the state's southern part of the state.

“The severity of these wildfires requires additional adjustments and a wide range of long-term federal recovery programs,” wrote a deputy partisan group of 47 lawmakers. Friday letter Four Congressional Leader: Senate Majority Leader John Tune (Rs.D.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.).

“We therefore recommend promptly approving California's major disaster declaration requests and providing all categories of public, individual support and direct federal assistance as defined by the governor's request,” they added.

Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) led the effort together with Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) and Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), the chairs of Republican and Democratic Congressional mandate respectively.

The California delegation said 40,000 acres were burned, 16,000 structures were destroyed, and tens of thousands of residents were forced to evacuate. Local research shows that property damage and capital losses can total up to $164 billion.

Newsom wrote to Congress in January, demanding $40 billion in aid from many federal sectors, spurring redevelopment and noting investments made to rebuild communities.

President Trump has long accused state Gavin Newsom (d) of failing to properly prepare wildfires, with executives saying that “strings” will come with any form of additional federal aid.

“The federal government's response is primarily money, so they'll have a string about the money they give to California,” Trump's special mission envoy Richard Grenell said in an interview with Politico last month.

Members of the Congress were prominently divided on the amount that lawmakers would contribute to January's reconstruction efforts as they prepared for future discussions on the topic.

The California delegation urged lawmakers to include Los Angeles County relief funds in future disaster relief bills.

“Just as the federal government has helped communities affected by wildfires in the western United States, tornadoes in the Midwest, ice storms in Texas and hurricanes in the southeast, we need to once again help recover families, businesses and communities affected in Los Angeles County,” Lawmaker wrote Friday.
