Trump admin ends Biden’s free ride: 5+ million deadbeat student loan borrowers to face collections

President Donald Trump’s Department of Education announced Monday that he will soon be able to finish the former Biden administration’s free ride for student loan borrowers by default.

ED’s Federal Student Aid Agency will resume collections on May 5th for more than 5 million borrowers who have not paid for at least 360 days. Another 4 million borrowers (not yet considered the default) have not been paid between 91 and 180 days.

“As a result, there could be almost 10 million borrowers by default in a few months. If this happens, almost 25% of the federal student loan portfolio will default.” press release From Ed.

“The Biden administration misunderstood the borrowers. The administration has no constitutional authority to wipe out debts, and the loan balance will not simply disappear.”

According to the department, 42.7 million student loan borrowers borrow more than $1.6 trillion. Most borrowers noted that they were either late or interest-free tolerance or deferred periods.

“Only 38% of borrowers have repaid and are current on student loans.” “By reopening the collection, taxpayers will protect them from being responsible for the costs of federal student loans that borrowers are willing to undertake to fund postsecondary education.”

Despite Congress mandating repayments in October 2023, the department has not collected on default student loans since March 2020.

Trump’s Ed denounced his previous administration for refusing to lift the suspension of his collection.

Furthermore, under former President Joe Biden, the ED “failed to process applications for borrowers who applied for income-driven repayments, and continued to push for falsely guided “on-ramp” and illegal loan waiver schemes, earning points with borrowers and masking delinquent and default rates.”

Over the next few weeks, the FSA will notify people who are currently defaulting about payment resumptions. The department will begin sending notifications for wage decorations “late this summer.”

“U.S. taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,” said Attorney General Linda McMahon.

“The Biden administration misunderstood the borrowers. The administration has no constitutional authority to wipe out debts, and the loan balance will not simply disappear,” she continued. “Hundreds of billions have already been transferred to taxpayers. Now, the Ministry of Education will work with the Ministry of Finance to responsibly rescue the student loan program, meaning that it will help borrowers return to repayment.
