Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) urged for bipartisan backing for dual sanctions on Russian products, stating that President Vladimir Putin is “sucking his foot down.”
“We need to adopt Graham’s laws, navigate both chambers, and implement those secondary sanctions against Russia,” Shaheen remarked regarding the legislation proposed by GOP Senator Lindsey Graham (SC).
Graham shared on Saturday that he has a bipartisan bill with nearly 60 co-sponsors aimed at enforcing secondary tariffs on nations buying Russian oil, gas, uranium, or other goods.
Shaheen noted that the Trump administration is collaborating with Graham on the legislation and “clearly recognizes” that the bill is in progress.
“This will assist in hampering their advancements as Vladimir Putin continues to struggle and do everything he can while gaining more time, allowing them to seize further territory in Ukraine and enhance Russia’s position,” she stated.
Since assuming office in January, the Trump administration has aimed to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Negotiating ceasefires has been more challenging than President Trump anticipated, amid growing tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Following a brief discussion with Zelensky over the weekend, Trump implied that Putin was drawing him in.
