Ocasio-Cortez criticizes Trump’s immigration policies as audience members interrupt town hall meeting.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed strong disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies toward immigrants, emphasizing the need for improved government efficiency and proposing budget cuts alongside discussions on freedom of speech. This took place at a contentious city hall meeting, which was also marked by protests related to the Israeli conflict in Gaza.

Members of the “Squad” addressed the administration’s efforts to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) affecting over 600,000 Venezuelans, as well as the crackdown on students participating in Palestinian protests on college campuses.

“This is anti-immigrant rhetoric, and it’s crucial to recognize that,” she said. “We often overlook what makes America great—our civil liberties and protections are fundamental to that.” She continued, “When we disregard the Constitution and legitimate processes, it weakens our identity as Americans.” Ocasio-Cortez argued that this environment is increasingly hostile to free speech.

She has had some tense exchanges with Tom Homan over immigration issues, urging him to “come for me.”

Ocasio-Cortez also voiced her concerns about cuts to environmental programs, lamenting, “Everything related to the environment seems to be seen as expendable, and I don’t think people realize the damage this causes.”

House Democrats representing New York’s 14th Congressional District, who are speculated to be potential candidates for 2028, faced disruptions from attendees during discussions about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

A female protester shouted angrily, “I’m a healthcare worker and I want to know what you’re doing about the genocide in Gaza.” The crowd responded with boos as she continued, “I’m a nurse—I’m embarrassed by you.” Some people in attendance reacted fiercely to the demonstrators. After the protester was escorted out, Ocasio-Cortez remarked on her willingness to engage with dissenting views, indicating, “I’m quite frustrated about several issues, but we need to hear each other out.”

She advised attendees to save questions for the Q&A portion, emphasizing the importance of allowing everyone access to information and dialogue.

Ocasio-Cortez is currently on a nationwide tour with Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) dubbed “Combat Oligarchy,” which has fueled speculation about her own future political aspirations for 2028. In the first quarter of 2025, she raised a record-breaking $9.5 million, followed by another $8.2 million in the next quarter.
