Iran Unveils New Missile Amid Tensions with the West
Tehran has announced the development of a new solid-fuel ballistic missile with a range of 1,200 kilometers (approximately 745 miles), according to state television. This revelation comes during a period marked by increasing tensions between Iran and Western nations.
The missile, named the Gasem BASIR, is described as a significant advancement in Iran’s defense capabilities. Concerns have been raised by Western countries regarding Iran’s missile programs, which they believe contribute to instability in the Middle East.
Iran maintains a network of allied groups, referred to as the “axis of resistance,” opposing Israel. This network includes the Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and Shiite militants in Iraq.
Last October, there was a notable escalation in hostilities when Israel conducted an operation against Iranian military facilities, responding to an Iranian missile attack linked to Iran’s retaliation for the deaths of leaders associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Recently, Iranian provincial television aired footage of the new missile, featuring an interview with Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh. He stated, “If we are attacked and war is made against us, we will respond decisively, targeting their interests and bases.” He emphasized that while Iran does not seek conflict with neighboring countries, American military bases remain a target.
The missile’s unveiling follows three rounds of discussions between Tehran and Washington regarding Iran’s nuclear program, which included the highest level of interactions since the US withdrew from a key agreement on the matter in 2018.
During a recent interview, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Iran to halt uranium enrichment, suggesting that only states with nuclear weapons pursue such activities. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remarked that credible agreements should dismantle Iran’s ability to enrich uranium and develop ballistic missiles.
Iran, however, asserts that its nuclear endeavors are peaceful and aimed at civilian purposes. Discussions about military capabilities, particularly concerning ballistic missiles, have been put aside. US President Donald Trump has warned of potential military action against Iran should diplomatic efforts falter, while also enforcing stricter sanctions targeting Iran’s oil industry.
