Reports indicate that the Department of Homeland Security under the Trump administration plans to fund flights for self-reporting immigrants who are in the country illegally, along with providing scholarships once their departure is confirmed.
According to Bill Melugin, DHS is set to announce this initiative today, allowing illegal immigrants who volunteer to leave the country to fly commercially. They would also receive a $1,000 scholarship upon verification of their exit.
DHS has informed @FoxNews that this approach could save taxpayers roughly 70%. The average cost of arresting, detaining, or deporting someone exceeds $17,000 due to operations costs by the department.
Those seeking to self-report must register through the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) home app, notifying the government of their intent to leave. By doing so, they may be “preferred for ICE halts” and could maintain the possibility of returning legally to the U.S. in the future.
On their website, DHS notes that illegal immigrants can leave the country “safely” and “normally” with various incentives, which include $1,000 scholarships and assistance with financial and travel needs to avoid removal by ICE.
Via DHS:
Individuals who voluntarily register through the CBP Home App may qualify for aid with their departure. If requested, the U.S. government will help in booking tickets and obtaining necessary travel documents. Those requesting assistance should aim for departure within 21 days of approval and ensure they provide accurate contact information for follow-ups.
It’s also mentioned that a scholarship would be provided “when the return is confirmed via the app once the travel is completed.”
“The CBP Home Program allows eligible individuals to return home without facing arrest, detention, or restraint,” the DHS website states, adding that this offers a “safe and orderly alternative that fosters support and flexibility instead of fear.”
“For those here illegally, choosing to leave voluntarily is the safest and most economical option to avoid potential arrest,” a statement emphasized.
“DHS is currently providing financial travel assistance and scholarships through the CBP Home App,” it said, highlighting this as a secure choice for law enforcement and a way to save taxpayers 70%.
“Register with the CBP Home App today to declare your intent to self-report,” the statement concluded.
