A former spokesman for President Joe Biden, who has been vocal about defending the administration’s economic policies, is teaming up with other political operatives to create a new group focused on criticizing Trump’s economic record, according to a report from The Associated Press.
Andrew Bates, the former spokesman, has taken on the role of communications advisor for the Cost Coalition. This group aims to promote negative narratives about Trump’s economy through various channels, including advertisements and social media. Bates will collaborate with former President George W. Bush’s spokesman, Terry Holt, among others, as per reports.
Bates has consistently advocated for Biden’s economic policies, previously highlighting how they prioritize the middle class despite facing challenges like inflation and rising living costs. In a March 2020 post, he claimed Biden’s policies positioned the middle class at the forefront, even as inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022. Under Biden, many American households struggled with rising grocery prices.
Additionally, energy prices surged during Biden’s presidency, especially as regulations on oil and gas extraction took effect, combined with an emphasis on green energy initiatives funded by taxpayers. Bates noted the impact of rising fuel prices in June 2022, asserting that energy issues are global and that Biden’s leadership is critical for the nation’s recovery.
Throughout Biden’s tenure, inflation has been a significant concern, affecting many American families. Still, the Biden-Harris administration has argued that the economic policies effectively benefited citizens. Bates maintained that Biden inherited a sound economy from Trump, showcasing his administration’s continual efforts to assist those struggling with financial burdens.
The Cost Coalition describes itself as a bipartisan initiative aiming to reveal how Trump’s policies are damaging to American prosperity, advocating for fairness in the economy. They’re addressing rising costs under the current administration, aiming to outline policies that contribute to economic strain.
Inflation rates reportedly fell more than anticipated in March, but public sentiment regarding the economy during Trump’s second term seems to be declining. Some experts have raised alarms that Trump’s tariffs could lead to increased prices for everyday items.
Notably, several figures connected to Kamala Harris’s past presidential campaign are part of this coalition, including individuals in leadership roles during her campaign.
Supporters have defended Biden amid growing concerns over his performance, particularly following the June 2024 presidential debate. Bates has been quoted stating that Biden showed no signs of serious health issues.
Requests for comments from the Cost Coalition have gone unanswered.
